Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe 2000

The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is the most important flat race in
Europe and the culminating event of the European racing season.
Run at the European classic distance of 2400 meters (approximately
1 1/2 miles), the fixture has a purse of 10.5 million Montjeu winning
the 1999 Arc de Triomphe over El Condor Pasa French Francs (approximately
$1.5 million US) making it the richest prize of any race in Europe.
The historic Hippodrome de Longchamp in Paris is home to the event
which was inaugurated in 1920 with the intention of making it an
important international event. The first running was won by Comrade
and the list of winners includes such champions as Ribot, Sea Bird,
Vaguely Noble, Mill Reef, Allez France, Alleged, All Along, and
Trempolino.
This year will mark the 80th running and last year's winner Montjeu
will be back to defend his title and attempt to become the 7th repeat
winner of the Arc. The other dual winners are: Alleged, Ribot, Tantieme,
Corrida, Motrico, and Ksar.
