A crowd of 76,043 braved the somewhat chilly overcast day as the
world's best Thoroughbreds converged at Churchill Downs for the
17th Breeders' Cup Championship. Boxcar payoffs were the order of
the day as several highly-regarded competitors failed to live up
to expectations. Distaff Breeders' Cup day started off with a big
shocker as huge favorite Riboletta finished 7th, beaten 8 3/4 lengths
by Spain at 56-1.
Continuing with the shocker theme, second choice and defending champ
Beautiful Pleasure finished 6th, 3/4 length ahead of Riboletta.10-1
Surfside and 12-1 Heritage of Gold completed the $6405.20 trifecta.
